The headlining story around the world this week is the fatal beating of Derrion Albert, a sophomore honor roll student at Christian Fenger Academy High School in Chicago, Il. Above are the pictures of the three teens charge so far with his murder.

More than 30 students were killed last school year in Chicago, and the city could exceed that number this year
Prosecutors charged four teenagers on Monday with fatally beating Albert (one not listed), who was walking to a bus stop when he got caught up in the mob street fighting.  Some say he has beaten for refusing to join a gang, others say he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Riley and Fenger students Silvonus Shannon, 19, and Eric Carson, 16, were charged Monday with murder and ordered held without bail. Eugene Bailey, 18, was charged later Monday. derrionalbert

Albert’s death was a result of a brawl between two neighborhood groups, one from the Altgeld Garden public housing complex and the other from the neighborhood known as the “Ville.” The violence stemmed from a shooting early on Thursday morning involving the two groups.

Carson, who is from the Ville and is charged as an adult, was the first to strike Albert on the head, using a long railroad tie

Albert was knocked out briefly, and when he woke up, a group from Altgeld attacked him. Riley allegedly used a railroad tie again to strike him and Shannon stomped on his head several times

She said her son had been chased out of school and stalked between classes by teens from the Ville. Smith, Riley’s mother, said she pulled another son, Vashion Bullock, 17, out of Fenger Wednesday because of safety reasons.

Neither Riley nor Shannon have a criminal history, and both hold jobs, their attorney said. Carson was on probation for a 2008 robbery conviction<

WHATS NEXT?

Before 2006, an average of 10-15 students were fatally shot each year in Chicago. That climbed to 24 fatal shootings in the 2006-07 school year, 23 deaths and 211 shootings in the 2007-08 school year and 34 deaths and 290 shootings last school year.

This month, the city announced a US $30 million project that targets 1,200 high school pupils identified as most at risk to become victims of gun violence, giving them full-time mentors and part-time jobs to keep them off the streets.

Despite the coverage of this horrific event, less than a week after the violent brawl that resulted in the death of 16-year-old Derrion Albert, another violent teen beating happened last night, this time in the Edgwater neighborhood.

A witness told police they saw the victim being chased by three males about 7:45 p.m. on the 6300 block of North Paulina Street, Chicago Police Lt. Paul Kusinski said.

After the three assailants caught up with the victim, all three beat him, and one reportedly struck him over the head using some type of “shiny” object, Kusinski said.

A witness to the attack also told the Tribune, “He was covered in blood. Blood was all over the street. It was all over his face, arms, and coming from the back of his head.” The 14-year-old victim was listed in critical condition this morning at Childrens Memorial Hospital with a fractured skull and undergoing surgery

I would like to say “I give my condolences to the family of Derrion Albert, and we are responding to the negative publicity my son is receiving when he was acting in self defense.

Both of my sons are in this videotaped incidents and I want to address specifically the other side that is not being portrayed in the media. Society is now convicting Eugene before knowing the story entirely.

I am deeply sadden that a mother has to defend her son for the death of another person’s son. I ask myself time and time again when I walk into the classroom, if this is your last day are you happy? Yes, I am because I had plenty chances to walk down the wrong path, but I had a single parent mother who didn’t give up. My point is; I teach these children and I feel their pain, but this is a different kind of pain mixed with non-parenting. What is going wrong? Why are other people left to raise your child? Why are other parents crying because someone elses son or daughter wants to be part of a gang and feels they should kill another human being to be part of that. Wake up and realize this will only get worse, just as racism.. We sweep it under the rug and years later it will haunt us…

Thank you for your comments. It is indeed a sad world full of mislead people young and old. Violence, sex, racism, and other evils are glamorized in the media and society and it has desensitized us all to not make a big deal about things until some gets hurt, or worse. Our prayer is that deaths like these do not go in vain and can serve as a wake up call to us all
