South African Caster Semenya easily won the 800 meter gold metal at the world championships. On that same day she had to undergo a gender test because of concerns she doesn’t meet requirements competing as a woman. Her muscular build and deep voice sparked these concerns. After winning with an impressive time of 2.45 seconds, Semenya did not speak to reporters or attend a news conference.
“We entered Caster as a woman and we want to keep it that way,” Mlangeni-Tsholetsane said. “Our conscience is clear in terms of Caster. We have no reservations at all about that.”
Medals have already been issued, but things are still in the air until the results come back. Semenya Could be stripped of the medal if it is proven that she is a man.
Semenya’s coach, Michael Seme, told South Africa’s News24 website: “We understand that people will ask questions because she looks like a man. It’s a natural reaction and it’s only human to be curious. People probably have the right to ask such questions if they are in doubt. But I can give you the telephone numbers of her room-mates in Berlin. They have already seen her naked in the showers and she has nothing to hide.”
What do you think woman or man? Time will tell…
