A lot of conversation has sparked since the release of Death of AutoTune (DOA) by Jay Z.  Whether or not hip hop artists who use the “T Pain voice”, sing on their songs, and/or rock colorful skinny jeans will reevaluate their image and music, and what effect (if any) Hov’s track will have on fans.  I proposed this question on my twitter a couple of days after the song was released [www.twitter.com/onehunndt, lol shameless plug] and received a few interesting responses:

Question-

“Do you think rappers who sing, use autotune, and/or rock skinny jeans are going to re-evaluate themselves now that Jay Z dropped DOA?”

Answers-

  • j_L9w   @onehunnidt yep!

  • CientifiQ @onehunnidt Probably not…I dont think HOV holds as much weight as he used to. Some may…A lot wont!

  • random_id   @onehunnidt I think that most of them will ;-0

Other some artist responses that we found:

@MCHammer I don’t care cause Jay Z is messin wit my paper.I had one autotune joint and him, Flex, and my old partner MrCee say I can’t use it

RT: @RealWizKhalifa I call Jay-Z old because he is OLD!!! it aint no diss, Its my opinion..Im not feelin the old man’s music no more. Sorry

Apparently Timbaland doesn’t appreciate Jay trying to kill his faux voice steez. Illseed caught a little word about the “drama” that’s unfolding concerning Jigga’s new track:

“Jay-Z gave autotune its official eulogy. “Autotune is Dead.” I wonder what T-Pain has to say about this. From what I understand or have been told, the person who had the most problem and did the majority of the hating on the Autotune was Timbaland, who had reportedly been cutting records with Jay for a minute. All his records with Jay had been autotuned to some extent or another. Apparently, the use of the tool was a bit too noticeable. It looks like the Timbaland songs might be scrapped or redone.”

In my opinion Jay Z is BY FAR the most influential and powerful hip hop figure in our generation.  He has withstood all of the trends in music and fashion from the 90s through to today.  I mean seriously, you’d be hard pressed to find another artist who has been relevant from the entire duration of the time we were rocking Hawaiian shirts, throwback jerseys and earlier, but still has respectable clout and status (and money) in 2009.

Whether or not the song has an effect on EVERYONE in the game has yet to be seen but it is inevitable that this release has already struck a cord with the “trenders” in the industry.

The game has and is ever changing.  I am the traditional music head.  Love to party, but hates the over abundance of party music and lack of content with what I hear on the radio.  I miss how the 90s were more of a mixture of tastes.  Actually I have a phrase I use often “Reality shows have killed television just as ringtone music has killed hip hop” (we will touch on that later).  This whole monkey see, monkey do tradition that has developed with the emergence of the next generation industry changes is overwhelming.  Hopefully Jay Z’s stance will do something about that.

But then again if EVERYONE listens and stops doing things just because Jigga suggests so, that would basically put us back in the same copy-cat cycle that we are already facing, wouldn’t it? (Lol confusing I know)
What do you think??

  1. Yes, I think that Jay-Z’s song Death of Autotune will definitely have an impact on hip-hop and make people reconsider using autotune so heavily. Jay-Z is well respected by many and has had a huge impact on the hip hop music industry. Do I think the song upset some artists? Of course it did. Will those upset artists reconsider using autotune so heavily in the future? Of course they will – when someone as influential as Jay-Z drops a song like that – everyone takes note. Personally I’ve heard enough T-Pain and Lil Wayne autotune to last me a lifetime – time to buck up and sing like a man guys!

  2. YO! I feel likt Jay-Z isn’t in a position to end or death to anything. I feel him being fed up with artists jumping on the Auto-Tune bandwagon but hold up – same holds true with a lot of trends that go in & out of the industry. I feel like let Auto Tune phase itself out and people that like it just like it, people that don’t well, they don’t. It annoying at times – especially listening to someone’s album with like 16 tracks on the Vo-corder but hey just like Gucci tracks are, right? They buy it, let em spend their money. Just cuz Jigga’s tryna 187 the Auto-Tune doesn’t mean I’m gonna spin his ish any more – or any less.

Again “what Jigga says goes”…..not that EVERYONE’s going to stop using autotune….I think it was just to make everyone aware that there are other things you can use to make music. People need to be less concerned about using autotune and start making REAL music, period. Lyrically, everything’s so horrible! All it really takes is a catchy beat and chorus and you’ve got a hit song, which is sad (i.e. Soulja Boy “Turn My Swag On”)….We now need to do a song called Death to the word SWAGGER! All the sudden EVERYONE has it?! Pah-lease!

WELL SAID MS. MARIAH…..JAY Z WILL HAVE AN IMPACT…BUT THAT DOESNT MEAN YOU SHOULD STOP YO HUSTLE JUST CUZ DA NEXT MAN SAID SO (EVEN IF IT IS JAY Z)

I feel that this song was long over due. the rap game is i dont know really how else to say it but its pretty much a flat line lyrically.i mean lets take a look at whats going on you have a bunch of rappers walking around looking like a bag of skittles with they’re bright colors shoes tee’s and jeans make’n song about bust’n on chicks backs and throw’n sheets on it or take’n a line from someone else’s mind and try’n to make a hit off of it because they couldn’t come up with something new and hot for themselves. i aint gonna lie when i likes autotone when it came out but now everyone has it on their song. why because someone else made paper off of it and instead of finding their own way they used someone else’s path. thats the problem with rap now everyone is in it just for the money and they have no heart jay was right to put his track out if there is one person we can rely on to keep it true and do their own thing it’s him. he put everyone on the spot and no one has the heart to respond everyone wants to walk around saying they have swagger where’s it at when the whole rap game is put on the spot by one man
