BIOGRAPHY
Currently recording KeepIt100 project for April 2012 release

March 2012- Winner of Coast2Coast DJs / Magazine SXSW artist showcase competition with performance of single “Father’s Day”

Onehunnidt is a Houston based rapper and poet. He has been recording music and performing poetry since the age of 11.  His story is one of the beautiful struggle of finding happiness from country boy roots and in near impoverished living conditions as a youth. Interesting fact, Onehunnidt is also the elder brother of the late JJ, mentioned in Drake’s 2010 hit single “Miss Me” featuring Lil Wayne (in the line, “Forever in our hearts, JJ. Love ya boy” – Drake).

Noting his biggest influences to be Jay Z, Tupac, Pimp C, Lauryn Hill and Kanye West, Onehunnidt differs from other artists by bringing a tremendous amount of personality and personability in his music.  Unafraid to be “different”, Onehunnidt’s real life experiences are his music’s substance and he doesn’t shy away from brash honesty:

“I’m from the south where ‘keep it 100′ is a phrase we use often. What that means is be 100% totally open and honest, and true to your word. Since I’ve always been that kind of person, I was granted that surname.  In a world and industry which focuses on creating images and maintaining marketing techniques more-so than integrity, I pride myself at staying dedicated to a niche of always being myself and reflecting real life into my talent.”

Musical Style/Genre: Lyrical hip hop. Southern twang and high energy with a poetic flow

Key Points of Interest:

  • Previously released Legacy of a Legend mixtape (2011) with DJ Candlestick as a dedication to the late JJ
  • Also a local poet, does various guest appearance at open mics, lounges, and on artists’ projects
  • Songs are concerned with political and cultural issues, unadulterated emotions common within the mid 20s urban culture, and personal real life circumstances and experiences

Art personified

“I’m from Houston and in the south there is a term we use all the time called ‘keep it 100′. What that means is be 100% totally open and honest, and true to your word. Since I’ve always been that kind of person, I was granted that surname.  In a world and industry which focuses on creating images and maintaining marketing techniques more-so than integrity, I pride myself at staying dedicated to a niche of always being myself and reflecting real life into my talent.  The goal is to allow people a visual and audial expression of that same term, 100% true to the things that set individuals apart: creativity, emotion, and means to communicate style.”

“Forever in our heart. JJ, Love you boy”. Words mentioned by Platinum recording office Drake on his single “Miss Me” that features Lil Wayne. JJ aka Shoota, born Jonathan Johnson was shot and February 4, 2010 in Houston, Texas at a gas station while changing a flat tire.

JJ was 21 years young at his death. His was the younger brother of poet/rap artist OneHunnidt. This year, OneHunnidt is releasing a project dedicated to the live, times, and memory of his deceased brother. The mixtape “Legacy of a Legend”, put together by Go DJ Candlestick, is a collaborative collection of exclusive and cover tracks by Onehunnidt and various artists. Onehunnidt, a surname given to the artist as a youngster because of his natural ability to be himself and “Keep it 100”, gives a creative and straight forward approach to his recordings. Known for his slick vocabulary and signature poetic style, OneHunnidt’s ability to tell a story is displayed in the creation of “Legacy of a Legend”.

The project is personal, including tidbits from the news clippings from the homicide and drops from JJ’s close associates, but it is also one that will appeal to music lovers and hip hop heads of all types. “Legacy of a Legend” has a variety of tracks from poetry, sentimental soulful ballads, “H Town” riding music, lyrically conscious songs, and club bangers. The tape is a full depiction of dealing with death but also a celebration of life.
